Haiti Earthquake Disaster

Dear HOW Members and Friends,

Our beloved Haiti continued to suffer one major disaster after another. Haiti suffered a catastrophic 7.0-magnitude earthquake that devastated the city of Port-au-Prince on January 12. A new  disastrous Cholera epidemic is  causing havoc in many parts of the country and Huricane Thomas is the coup de gras that's leaving all of us asking the same questions – Why Haiti? What did Haiti do to deserve such a fate? When are we going to get a break?

I don’t know if anyone has any answers, but I find myself dumbfounded looking for an explanation that does not exist. HOW was founded to help the poor orphaned children of Haiti and unfortunately many of them are the victim of these horrible disasters because they are the most neglected group in the Haitian society and they depend on humanitarian help that is becoming increasingly difficult to deliver. As CARE described the earthquake, “We’re particularly worried about the children, because so many schools seem to have collapsed,” said Sophia Perez, CARE’s country director in Haiti . “In Haiti , children go to school in the afternoon. Children were still in school when the earthquake hit, so there are many children trapped. It’s horrifying.”

I am happy to report that the Sister Dona's orphanage did not suffer any major damages and all the kids and staffs are doing well.  With this tragedy, the orphanage has exceeded its capacity and relies on donations to provide a safe haven for the numerous new orphans.

Your generous contribution would go toward the following:

-       Expanding the capacity of the orphanage to accommodate additional children

-       Providing them with 3 meals a day

-       Recruiting additional staff to care for them

-       Help build a much needed pantry to store their food supplies from pests and theft.

In order to alleviate the suffering of the Haitian people, The Haitian Orphans Wish Organization (HOW) sat up a special Earthquake Relief Fund that went go directly to organization like  Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity to assist the relief effort. We sent them a donation of $11,000. We  also provided emergency donation to three orphanages that are in need. We sent a donation of $2,500 to Sister Dona orphanage in addition to our monthly contribution.

Right now, cash donations are the most efficient and effective way to help the relief effort in Haiti . They allow humanitarian organizations to purchase the exact type and quantity of items needed by those affected by the crisis.

You can contribute in the following ways:

·      Send a tax exempt contribution to the Haitian Orphans Wish P.O. Box 138 Uniondale NY 11553

You have shown tremendous support for our cause in the past and I am sure that it will intensify because Haiti needs it more than ever.

On behalf of the HOW members, thank you for your generosity and your continued support for the orphaned children of Haiti. Our thoughts and sentiments go out to the victims in Haiti, as well as their families and friends around the world.
